So you’re planning to elope in the Adirondacks, and Rocky Mountain caught your eye. There’s no surprise at to why! Its a perfect, short hike with full 360º views overlooking the Fulton Chain Lakes. I have some useful information that will help you plan out the perfect day!
Rocky mountain is located on Route 28 in Eagle bay, just outside of Inlet NY. It has an elevation of 2,205 FT and has a Summit trail of about a half mile. It takes roughly 1 hour from base to Summit to hike it at a moderate pace. The trail starts off flat, but soon becomes steep. On a wet day the rocks and roots along the trail can be very slippery, so take caution if this is the case, especially on the way back down. During “muddy” seasons like Spring and Fall its best to exercise caution.
When planning your elopement on this summit, for the brides: consider if you want to hike in your wedding attire. I always suggest hiking shoes or boots with good tread especially for these conditions.
Before the top, there are a few areas where small rock shelves come into the picture. They can easily be avoided, but if you decide to take the direct approach choose your footing carefully, as these sections can be slick in wet conditions. The path levels off just before reaching the open, rocky summit, where views overlooking the Fulton Chain of Lakes await!
It’s the perfect, clear view for anyone making their way to the southern part of the Adirondack park.
It’s a relatively easy hike in my opinion compared to say Blue Mountain or Cascade.
Rocky mountain doesn’t currently have any permit restrictions in place, however you should embrace Leave No Trace principles, and respect the land in the ADK, and be courteous to other hikers and respect the trail. Carry in what you carry out, etc.
In my opinion, if you are looking to have a large group accompany you on your ceremony, I would recommend a group of 10 or smaller, to help keep to these LNT principles. You don’t want to over crowd other hikers that may be nearby and want to experience the views as well, and you want to help keep the trails in good condition.
If you are hiring an Officiant of any kind it is good to note they are legally able to do so and willing to make the trip to the base as well as the summit if you wish to have your vows spoken there. In NY State you must have a legally registered officiant sign your marriage license and look it over with you before submitting.
Inlet is the town nearby a bit further north on Route 28. There’s a few great restaurants if you are looking to have a quick bite to eat or coffee. You aren’t far from Limekiln Lake and Campground for a nice Canoe rental or a camping weekend.
The trail also is neighboring Black Bear peak, a little longer climb that you can add on an extra hike just for you to enjoy, and to claim a new fire tower challenge!
There is no permit requirement for Rocky Mountain or The Adirondack Park, however Leave No Trace principles are recommended to keep the trails maintained and in good standing so they can be enjoyed by other hikers for many years.
It’s always best to get your marriage license in the county or township you plan to be married in.
The County: Hamilton County : https://www.hamiltoncounty.com/index.php/clerk
TOWN: Inlet, Currently the Clerk works remotely, you will want to give them a call!
You’ll want to visit these halls to obtain your license for a day of signing (still 24 hr waiting period), or if you wish to sign at a later date, your own local county or town is sufficient.

Some things to keep in mind, off season in the Adirondacks is considered to be from November to April. Some locations and attractions in certain areas may be closed during this time. Please plan accordingly.
