What Is an Elopement, Anyway?
Elopements used to mean running off in secret, but today, they’re about intention—crafting a wedding day that’s meaningful, personal, and free from pressure.
Elopement vs. Traditional Wedding
- Elopement: An intimate, meaningful experience where the focus is on the two of you—whether that’s just the two of you or a small group of loved ones.
- Wedding: A structured event where the focus often includes guest experience, traditions, and logistical planning.
If you’re dreaming of a day where you get to do what you love, in a place that feels like you, then an elopement might be exactly what you need.
Where to Elope in New York
New York has some of the most epic locations for elopements, from city skylines to breathtaking mountains. Here are some of my favorite options:
1. Adventure & Destination Elopements
Want to elope in nature? Let’s go! Here are some of the most stunning outdoor locations in NY:
- Adirondacks – Hike up Whiteface Mountain, say your vows at Lake Placid, or find a secluded waterfall deep in the High Peaks Wilderness.
- Catskills – A dreamy mix of mountain views, waterfalls, and cozy cabin vibes.
- Finger Lakes – Wine country + gorgeous lakes + breathtaking waterfalls. Taughannock Falls is a favorite!
- Letchworth State Park – Known as the “Grand Canyon of the East,” it’s perfect for couples who want waterfall views without a long hike.
- Minnewaska State Park – A stunning location with cliffs, lakes, and forest trails.
- Mohonk Preserve – Dramatic rock formations and peaceful lakefronts.
- Thousand Islands – Get married on the water or at one of the many charming island spots.
👉 Pro Tip: Some state parks require permits for weddings or professional photography. Always check with the park office before making plans!

2. Courthouse & City Hall Elopements
Want something simple? Courthouse weddings are quick, easy, and affordable! Each town and county in NY has its own City Hall where you can get married. Some local favorites for me are Syracuse, Utica, Saratoga Springs and Albany. If you’re dreaming of a small-but-stylish city elopement, New York City’s Marriage Bureau is a perfect choice for that big city, small wedding vibe!
3. Backyard & Airbnb Elopements
A cozy, intimate option! Whether it’s your backyard, a beautiful park, or a charming Airbnb, this is perfect if you want a relaxed but special atmosphere. Theres a ton of Pro Tip: Many Airbnbs in NY allow small ceremonies—just check with the host first!
Some places to stay that may or may not be an AirBNB:
- Fourth lake Boathouse, Old Forge, NY
- Historic Camp house, Ticonderoga, NY
- Evergreen A-Frame Cabin, Remsen, NY
- Rocky Cabin, Schroon Lake, NY
- AND MORE!
4. Intimate Weddings & Multi-Day Elopements
Want a few guests or a multi-day experience? You can elope one day and have a celebration the next! Think:
- Saying your vows on a mountaintop, then having dinner with family the next evening.
- A cozy cabin elopement, followed by a weekend of hiking and exploring.
- A simple ceremony at an estate, followed by a backyard celebration.
The possibilities? Endless.

Choosing When to Elope in New York
There’s no wrong time to elope, but here’s how the seasons can impact your day:
- Winter – Magical snowy landscapes, frozen waterfalls, and cozy vibes. Perfect for snowshoeing or winter hikes. Cons to this: Some accommodations and venues in remote areas close for the season.
- Spring – Blooming flowers, comfortable temperatures, and fewer crowds. Ideal for garden elopements or lakeside vows. Cons to this: Weather is unpredictable—rain and mud are common, which can affect accessibility.
- Summer – Lush greenery, warm weather, and golden sunsets. Great for hiking, boat elopements, or adventurous mountain vows. Cons to this: Heat and humidity can be intense, especially in July and August, which can also bring on a lot of bug activity in some areas.
- Fall – Stunning foliage, cooler weather, and cozy elopement vibes. Hands down the most popular season in NY! Cons to this: Peak foliage season (late September to mid-October) attracts visitors, making some locations busy.
>>> Pro Tip: Weekday elopements are the way to go! Locations are quieter, Airbnbs are cheaper, and you get way more privacy.
Choosing the Best Season for Your New York Elopement
Every season in New York offers something unique, and there’s no wrong time to elope. If you love the idea of lush greenery and rushing waterfalls, spring might be the perfect fit. Summer is ideal for adventure elopements with warm nights and vibrant landscapes. Fall provides unmatched foliage and crisp air, while winter offers a peaceful, snow-covered escape. No matter the season, choosing the right location and planning for the elements will make your elopement an unforgettable experience.

- Your officiant can be a judge, mayor, minister, or even a friend who gets ordained online!
If you need an officiant who hikes – I’m your gal!
Step 3: File Your Marriage License
- After the ceremony, your officiant will sign the license.
- Submit it to the same clerk’s office where you got it.
